Methodology

Every number on CostAlmanac traces to a public U.S. government source with a date. We never fabricate or estimate a value and present it as data — a gap is shown as unavailable, not filled with a guess.

Data pipeline

We ingest bulk data from Census (ACS), BEA (Regional Price Parities), and EIA (energy prices), validate ranges, and store a dated snapshot. Pages read that snapshot, so numbers are consistent and cited with an "as of" date. See sources.

Calculators

Calculator formulas are standard, published methods (amortization for loans/mortgages; IRS brackets for federal tax; FICA for payroll). Each formula is unit-tested against a hand-verified reference value. Tax brackets are dated to their tax year and updated when the IRS publishes new figures.

Freshness

Every data page shows an "Updated" badge with the source agencies. When a source publishes a new vintage, affected pages regenerate automatically.
